Buckingway: The New Inn public house at the A14/Swavesey junction.. Description
This photograph was found amongst brick rubble in the yard of The New Inn when building work was taking place in 1960.It was taken about 1890 and shows Richard Topper the publican standing outside the public house. Note the shutters on the lower windows which provided added security at night.The board over the door says, Richard Topper Iicensed to sell wines spirits etc. During Richard’s time at The New Inn cars started to use the High Road. The building on the left was used to house the buggy of a traveller staying for the night. The grate under the window provided light and ventilation to the cellar. J.S.
